India’s Ali Fazal Among the Top 10 Stars to Look Out for in Hollywood in 2017 Says Variety

It’s a matter of pride that our very own desi boy, Ali Fazal, has been named as one of the top 10 stars to watch out for this year.

Back in 2013 when I was working at MissMalini, I had interviewed Ali Fazal fresh from the success of Fukrey, a film which got him widely noticed and critical acclaim for his acting chops.

Before that, he played a small role in 3 Idiots and was part of the ensemble cast of Always Kabhi Kabhi, a film which tanked at the box office.

However, over the past two years, Ali Fazal has gone international and made his presence felt in films like Furious 7 (2015) where he played a small yet pivotal role and more recently, the lead opposite Dame Judi Dench in Victoria & Abdul which releases later this year.

But unlike the other stars who have a huge PR machinery to document their every move in Hollywood and feed it to the press back in India, Ali has gone about his work quietly without any shoo-sha! You’ll rarely find this reticent boy lobbying for interviews and splashing stories about himself in the media or on his social media accounts.

He is one of the few who prefers to keep a low profile and not tomtom his achievements to anybody who will listen. So it came as a huge surprise when, Variety – the Hollywood bible – recently declared Fazal to be among the 10 actors to watch for in 2017.

In our opinion, this is huge simply because stars like Priyanka Chopra & Deepika Padukone – who have done more work and bigger films – have unfortunately not been mentioned alongside him.

But did he always want to be an actor?

In his interview with me for MissMalini, Ali says, “I was a movie buff since I was a kid. I would be watching movies all the time. But I never really thought of it as a career because I’m from a very middle class family where acting is considered nautanki and it was one of those taboos. But I think it took off when I came to Bombay and joined St. Xavier’s College. I think that’s where it took off.”

Congratulations, Ali, on this lovely shout-out from Variety. And we can’t wait to see you become Hollywood’s next big thing!
