Industrialist Sanjay Dalmia, through his NGO Bharat Maa Shaheed Samman Trust, felicitated and honoured Marathas and accomplished Maharashtrians at a glittering soiree in Mumbai.
At a glittering ceremony at The Oberoi Hotel’s iconic Rooftop in Mumbai, a motley cru of celebrities from the Maratha and Maharashtrian communities were thrust in the spotlight as industrialist Sanjay Dalmia presented them with honours for their varied accomplishments.
While designer Nachiket Barve and supermodel Ujjawala Raut were called on to the stage and felicitated, other’s like the Late (legendary) singers Kishori Amonkar and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi were posthumously remembered and honoured at the evening.
But it was the jovial and amiable Maharaja of Baroda, Samarjitsinh Rao Gaekwad and his gorgeous wife, Maharani Radhika Raje, who were the cynosure of all eyes.
The Maharani (dressed elegantly in a pink chiffon saree) regaled the audience with anecdotes about how she seamlessly adapted to the Maratha culture after her marriage (since she is originally a Rajput Princess from Wankaner) and how she enjoys promoting the culture at various events.
The Maharaja too, entertained all the assembled dignitaries with bon mots and peppered his short speech with interesting tidbits about growing up with the Maratha cultural influences.
However, what we found very fascinating was a small exhibit of headgear (not originals) which were worn by the Maratha royals in their hey day.
